Writing Reflection Essay - 905 Words
Writing a decent essay is as tedious, nerve racking, and strenuous as constructing a layer cake from scratch. First you have to decide that you are going to tackle this feat, and that can be your biggest challenge, motivation. Then you have, you must figure out what kind of cake batter you want to use. Collect all the ingredients to mesh together well, making each layer at a time. You throw all the layers together hoping that somehow they will come together to form a nifty design. But, they donââ¬â¢t right away, for now it is just a leaning tower of cake parts. So then you start revising/modifying, adding toothpicks to fix the lean to one side. You coat the whole damn thing in icing, in an attempt to make it look better, but the first coatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He was a very ââ¬Ëcunningââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëcharmingââ¬â¢ man, not only did Brennan blatantly state that he was charming, but his actions in the womanââ¬â¢s home were very smart and well thought out. This made my argument about his swiftness stronger and more concise. Paying attention to more detail in the Brennanââ¬â¢s piece, I was able to pencil in another argument based on the color green. Unfortunately, the paragraph was not directly supportive of my thesis. The outburst of the paragraph seemed to throw the entire flow of the paper off balance, therefore it was added and immediately cut. The first layer of icing on my paper was intense; cutting words, adding works, redefining sentence structures, and removing my trademark awkward phrasing. The first to get revamped was the thesis. The original thesis lead to questions and issues based on the word hope, that I did not address in the length of my paper. In order to remedy the situation, there was a minor phrase that was cut and replaced with the actual supporting data. Next in my local revisions were the long drawn out thoughts that needed to be simplified and broken down into different sentences. This happened to be in almost every paragraph and where most of my time and energy was exhausted. Countries that supported European Union are Belgium, Estonia, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia and Slovakia. European Union faced challenges from Russia that is still creating problem for several countries that are trying to join European Union (Soetendorp, 2014). European Union is an incredible success as there are no similar projects that have 27 countries as members, that are working collaboratively. Those countries are working together to develop successful legislative, judicative and fiscal policies in order to protect the customers and people of Europe (Rehm, 2013). On the other hand, European Union is also known as the most successful peacekeeping policy that has successfully prevented World War III until now by creating strict rules and regulations. 6. Among some long term causes World War II, the main reason was found in the conditions preceding World War I. It is also said World War II was the continuation of World War I. Therefore, it can be said that World War II was expected even before the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. However, there were two main reasons that that influenced World War II. One was the rise of Italian fascism 1920s and Japanese militarism that facilitated the invasions of China in 1930 (Clayton Barnes, 2015). Other was the political take over by Hitler and his Nazi party that happened in Germany that exhibited aggressive foreign policy. During the year of 1931, depression struck Japan and its economy. Government of Japan failed to improve the economy of the country and at that time people started to favor the army of Japan. The Army of Japan believed that Manchuria being a vast and thinly populated area, would help the country to solve their over populated areas. They also believed that as the Manchuria was rich in forests and natural resources, it was perfect for Japan to improve their economy. However, Manchuria showed their allegiance to China (Clayton Barnes, 2015). That was the time when Japan invaded China by destroying a section of railway near Mukden a city of Manchuria. On the other hand, Hitler and his Nazi party started to spread their polices all around the country with an aim to control the world with the same policies. Kierkegaard Essays - Sren Kierkegaard, Philosophy Of Life, Meaning
Kierkegaard Kierkegaard felt that subjective reflection was more crucial to the individual life than objective reflection because it focused on passion and human existence instead of logic and impersonal truth. The objective world is the world of facts and truth independent of the perceptions of humans. Objective reflection focuses on what actually is, in the objective world. Objective reflection centers on the things and ideas in the world that can give meaning to life. The subjective world is the world of human thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. It focuses on the relationship between people and their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions in respect to their lives. It centers on how meaning in life is viewed subjectively, or how humans find meaning in their lives. So, basically what he is saying is, it is the relationship to what a person values in life. One major difference I noticed in the reading, between the objective and subjective realms, is in regards to being versus becoming. Kierkegaard stated the objective world is as it is: being. The subjective world is always becoming something else through internal conflicts and struggle. However, the latter difference then kind of creates a chain as another difference arises between the two realms. The objective world is based in reason, while the subjective world is based in passion. Kierkegaard believed that subjective reflection was the key understanding meaning in life. He kind of complains with the objective reflection stating that it is impersonal and an indifferent relation to existence. As a matter of fact, this terminology as I shall call it, defines just what the objective world and objective reflection is: being independent of any human subjectivity. Subjective reflection naturally focuses on human existence in a personal, inward way without detachment as Kierkegaard put it. Kierkegaard goes on to use the knowledge of God as an example to show why subjective reflection is more important. He believes that there is the objective reflection that states that this is the true God, but subjectively, the relation to God that the person has, is a God-relation. He makes sure to point out that there really is no truth in the situation without the relation to God because the relation to God is more important than the objective proof of God's existence. So with that in mind, to treat God objectively is to treat Him as an object. However, God is a subject and therefore can only be related to subjectively in inwardness. So it is the HOW which is important to Kierkegaard, not the WHAT. The strongest example of his reasons for this comes in his idea of the leap of faith when faced with the absurd. I say absurd partially because Kierkegaard is an existentialist, yet different from those of modern present time. The absurd, with consideration to Christianity, is the idea that the eternal God could never actually exist in human form as Christ did. It is a paradox, it just cannot happen. There can be no objective justification for such a paradox at all. Kierkegaard sees this not too important because what is truly important is the relationship one has to God. This is where the leap of faith comes into place. One is faced with complete absurdity and paradox, and one then abandons reason for completely blind faith. There is no rational justification for it, only inward justification for the existing individual. For Kierkegaard there really was no point in finding objective truths, he only truly valued subjec tive truth. This meant that the truth was in respect to a person's relations to other things in the world or to God. The Anatomy Of Corn If you are reading this, corn has touched your life in some way. We eat corn, animals eat corn, cars eat corn (well, it can be used as a biofuel), and we even can eat corn out of a container made from corn (think: bioplastics). It is projected that the U.S. corn yield will reach over 14 billion bushels. However, what do you know about the corn plant itself? Did you, for example, know that corn is a grass and not a vegetable? The Seed: The Beginnings Of The Corn Plant Look at a corn cob - you will see the seeds! The kernels that you eat can also be used as the seed source to start new plants. Dont worry; the corn kernels that you eat wont grow in your stomach. Specific corn plants are set aside to provide seed. Corn Growth Stages The corn plants growth stages are broken down into vegetative and reproductive stages. The vegetative growth stages are VE (emergence of the plant), V1 (first fully expanded leaf), V2 (second fully expanded leaf), etc. up to however many leaves appear. The last stage is called VT, referring to when the tassel fully emerges.The reproductive stages are noted as R1 through R6. R1 refers to when the corn silks are first visible outside the husks and pollination occurs. (This process will be explained more fully later in the article.) During the other stages, the kernels are developing. At the final (R6) stage, the kernels have reached their maximum dry weight. Seedlings are dependent on kernel reserves up until about the V3 leaf stage when they become dependent on the roots to take up nutrients. Corn Roots Corn plants are unusual in that they have two distinct sets of roots: regular roots, called seminal roots; and nodal roots, which are above the seminal roots and develop from the plant nodes. The seminal root system includes the plants radicle (the first root emerging from the seed). These roots are responsible for taking up water and nutrients, and for anchoring the plant.The second root system, the nodal roots, is formed about an inch or so below the soil surface, but above the seminal roots. The nodal roots are formed at the base of the coleoptile, which is the primary stem that emerges from the ground. The nodal roots are visible by the V2 stage of development. The seminal roots are important to the survival of the seedling, and damage can delay emergence and stunt development. This is because the corn plant depends on the nutrients present in the seed until the nodal roots are developed. As soon as the coleoptile emerges from the soil, the seminal roots cease to grow. Nodal roots that form above the ground are called brace roots, but they function similarly to the nodal roots below the ground. Sometimes brace roots actually penetrate the soil and take up water and nutrients. These roots may be needed for water uptake in some cases, as the crown of a young corn plant is only about 3/4 below the soil surface! Therefore, corn can be vulnerable to dry soil conditions as they dont have a deep root system. Corn Stalk And Leaves Corn grows on a single stem called a stalk. Stalks can grow up to ten feet tall. The plants leaves emerge from the stalk. A single corn stalk can hold between 16 and 22 leaves. The leaves wrap around the stalk, rather than having a stem. The part of the leaf that wraps around the stem is called the node. Corn Reproductive Structures: The Tassel, Flowers, and Ears The tassel and the corn ears are responsible for reproduction and formation of the corn kernels. The tassel is the male part of the plant, which emerges from the top of the plant after all of the leaves have developed. Many male flowers are on the tassel. The male flowers release pollen grains which contain the male reproductive cells. The female flowers develop into the corns ears, which contain the kernels. The ears contain the female eggs, which sit on the corn cob. Silks - long strands of silky material - grow from each egg and emerge from the top of the ear. Pollination occurs when pollen is carried from the tassels to the exposed silks on the ear of corn, which is the female flower on the plant. The male reproductive cell goes down to the female egg contained within the ear and fertilizes it. Each strand of fertilized silk develops into a kernel. The kernels are arranged on the cob in 16 rows. Each ear of corn averages about 800 kernels. And, as you learned in the first section of this article, each kernel can potentially become a new plant!

Anaximander Thalesââ¬â¢ younger contemporary from Miletus, Anaximander, born toward the end of the seventh century B. C. E. , found the explanatory principle of things in what he called ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëthe apeiron,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ a word that might be translated as ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëthe indefinite,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëthe boundless,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ or both. This opens up the possibility that the apeiron is both immeasurably large in its temporal and physical extent and also qualitatively indefinite in that it is without measurable inner boundaries. Equally striking is Anaximanderââ¬â¢s description of the universe as a closed, concentric system, the outer spheres of which, by their everlasting motion, account for the stability of our earth, a drum-shaped body held everlastingly in a state of equipoise at the center. Whatever the inadequacy in certain details (the stars are placed nearer to the earth than the moon), with Anaximander the science of cosmological speculation took a giant step forward. As far as life on earth is concerned, Anaximander offered another striking hypothesis. The first living things, according to him, were ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëborn in moisture, enclosed in thorny barksââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (like sea urchins), and ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëas their age increased, they came forth onto the drier partââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (as phrased by Aetius [first to second century C. E. ]). Pythagoras Although we know that Pythagoras was a historical figure, it is difficult to determine exactly what Pythagoras himself taught. He wrote nothing, and the ideas of other members of the community were attributed to him as a sign of respect and as a way of lending weight to the ideas. Plato and Aristotle rarely assign ideas to Pythagoras himself, although Pythagorean ideas seem to have influenced Platoââ¬â¢s philosophy. Pythagoreans asserted that number is the first principle of all things. They were the first systematic developers of mathematics in the West and discovered that natural events could be described in mathematical terms, especially as ratios. To the Pythagoreans, the ââ¬Å"principle of numberâ⬠accounted for everything. Number was a real thing. Somehow, numbers existed in space, not just as mental constructs. According to Pythagorean doctrine, the entire universe is an ordered whole consisting of harmonies of contrasting elements. The Greek for ââ¬Å"ordered wholeâ⬠is cosmos. The Pythagoreans were the first philosophers to use the term cosmos to refer to the universe in this way. The ââ¬Å"celestial music of the spheresâ⬠is the hauntingly beautiful phrase the Pythagoreans coined to describe the sound of the heavens as they rotate according to cosmic number and harmony. Xenophanes A fourth Ionian philosopher, Xenophanes of Colophon, born around 580 B. C. E. , s the first we know of to overtly attack the anthropomorphism of popular religious belief, in a series of brilliant reductio ad absurdum arguments. His own view has been understood, ever since Aristotle, as pantheistic. Xenophanes was also the first philosopher we know of to ask what degree of knowledge is attainable. In B34 we read: ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëthe clear and certain truth no man has seen, nor will there be anyone who knows about the gods and what I say about all things. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Several ancient critics took this to be an indication of Xenophanesââ¬â¢ total scepticism. On this basis of moderate empiricism and scepticism, Xenophanes offered a number of opinions of varying plausibility about the natural world, one of whichââ¬âa strong, evolutionary interpretation of the discovery on various islands of fossils of marine animalsââ¬âis enough to constitute a major claim to fame in natural philosophy and ranks with his other significant steps in epistemology (the theory of knowledge dealing with what we know, how we know it, and how reliable our knowledge is), logic (the study of rational inquiry and argumentation), and natural theology (the attempt to understand God from natural knowledge). Heraclitus One of the most important and enigmatic of the Presocratics, Heraclitus (fl . 500 b. c. e. , d. 510ââ¬â480 b. c. e. ), said that ignorance is bound to result when we try to understand the cosmos when we do not even comprehend the basic structure of the human psyche (soul) and its relationship to the Logos. The complex Greek word logos is intriguing. It could and at times did mean all of the following: ââ¬Å"intelligence,â⬠ââ¬Å"speech,â⬠ââ¬Å"discourse,â⬠ââ¬Å"thought,â⬠ââ¬Å"reason,â⬠ââ¬Å"word,â⬠ââ¬Å"meaning,â⬠ââ¬Å"study of,â⬠ââ¬Å"the record of,â⬠ââ¬Å"the science of,â⬠ââ¬Å"the fundamental principles of,â⬠ââ¬Å"the basic principles and procedures of a particular discipline,â⬠ââ¬Å"those features of a thing that make it intelligible to us,â⬠and ââ¬Å"the rationale for a thing. â⬠The Heraclitean capital L Logos is like God, only without the anthropomorphizing (humanizing) of the earlier philosophers and poets who attributed human qualities to the gods. According to Heraclitusââ¬â¢s impersonal view of God, the Logos is a process, not an entity. As such, the Logos is unconcerned with individuals and human affairs, in much the same way that gravity affects us but is unconcerned with us. More radically yet, Heraclitus asserted that even though things appear to remain the same, ââ¬Å"Change alone is unchanging. â⬠Traditionally, it has been held that Heraclitus went so far as to claim that everything is always changing all the time. But whether he really meant that everything is always changing, or that individual things are held together by energy (change), remains unclear. Anaximenes Anaximanderââ¬â¢s younger contemporary, Anaximenes, who lived during the sixth century B. C. E. appears to revert to a prior and less sophisticated vision in claiming that the earth, far from being a drum-shaped body held in equipoise at the center, is flat and ââ¬Ëââ¬Ërides on,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ supported by air. The same might be said of his contention that the basic, ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëdivineââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ principle of things was not some indefinite entity but something very much part of our experience; namely, air. Anaximenesââ¬â¢ view would also no doubt have seemed to be corroborated by the fact that the universe, commonly understood as a living thing and hence needing a soul to vivify it, possessed in air that very ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëbreathââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ that for most Greeks constituted the essence of such a soul. Parmenides Parmenides of Elea (fift h century b. c. e. ) radically transformed the early philosophersââ¬â¢ interest in cosmology, the study of the universe as a rationally ordered system (cosmos), into ontology, the study of being. By common agreement he was the giant among the pre-Socratics. According to Parmenides, none of his predecessors adequately accounted for the process by which the one basic stuff of the cosmos changes into the many individual things we experience every day. In his search for a solution to the problem of ââ¬Å"the one and the many,â⬠Parmenides turned to a reasoned analysis of the process of change itself. According to Parmenides, all sensations occur in the realm of appearance. This means that reality cannot be apprehended by the senses. Change and variety (the many) are only appearances; they are not real. If this is true, then our most commonly held beliefs about reality are mere opinions. The senses cannot recognize ââ¬Å"what is,â⬠much less can they discoverââ¬âobserveââ¬âit, ever. In other words, whatever we see, touch, taste, hear, or smell is not real, does not exist. Perhaps most unsettling of all, Parmenides ââ¬Å"solvedâ⬠the problem of the appearance of change by concludingââ¬âin direct opposition to Heraclitusââ¬â¢s insistence that everything is always changingââ¬âthat the very concept of change is self-contradictory. What we think of as change is merely an illusion. The logic runs as follows: ââ¬Å"Changeâ⬠equals transformation into something else. When a thing becomes ââ¬Å"something else,â⬠it becomes what it is not. But since it is impossible for ââ¬Å"nothingâ⬠(what is not) to exist, there is no ââ¬Å"nothingâ⬠into which the old thing can disappear. (There is no ââ¬Å"no placeâ⬠for the thing to go into. ) Therefore, change cannot occur. Empedocles posited, against Parmenides, change and plurality as features of reality, but affirmed the eternality of anything that is real; the sphere-like nature of the real when looked at as a totality and the fact that the real is a plenum, containing no ââ¬Ëââ¬Ënothingnessââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëemptinessââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. Anaxagoras likewise posited change, plurality, and divisibility as features of reality, yet also affirmed the eternality of the real (understood by him as an eternally existent ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëmixtureââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ of the ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëseedsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ of the things currently constituting the world, rather than the eternal combinings and recombinings, according to certain ratios of admixture, of four eternally existent ââ¬Ëââ¬Ërootsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ or elemental masses). Leucippus Leucippus of Miletus (c. fi ft h century b. c. e. ) and Democritus of Abdera (c. 460ââ¬â370 b. . e. ) argued that reality consists entirely of empty space and ultimately simple entities that combine to form objects. T is materialistic view is known as atomism. Leucippus is credited with being the originator of atomism and Democritus with developing it. Rather than reject Parmenidesââ¬â¢ assertion that change is an illusion, Leucippus argued that reality consists of many discrete ââ¬Å"ones ,â⬠or beings. Zeno Zeno, who was born early in the fifth century B. C. E. , was a friend and pupil of Parmenides. In his famous paradoxes he attempted to show by a series of reductio ad absurdum arguments, of which the best known is perhaps that of Achilles and the tortoise, the self-contradictory consequences of maintaining that there is a real plurality of things or that motion or place are real. The prima facie brilliance of many of the arguments continues to impress people, though it soon becomes clear that the paradoxes turn largely on the failure or unwillingness of Zeno, like so many Pythagoreans of the day, to distinguish between the concepts of physical and geometrical space. Zenoââ¬â¢s way of constructing the problem makes it seem that his primary object is to defame pluralists by attacking the logical possibility of explaining how there can be motion in the world. Gorgias Gorgias has achieved fame for the stress he laid upon the art of persuasion (ââ¬Ëââ¬Ërhetoricââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢), although whether he wrote the baffling On What Is Not as a serious piece of persuasive reasoning or as some sort of spoof of the Eleatic philosophy of Parmenides and others remains disputed. Its basic, and remarkable, claim is prima facie, that nothing in fact is (exists /is the case [esti] or is knowable or conceivable. Any exiguous plausibility that the arguments supporting this claim possess turns on our overlooking Gorgiasââ¬â¢s failure, witting or unwitting, to distinguish carefully between knowing and thinking, along with his various uses of the verb ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëto be. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ If the failure was witting, the document can be seen as a skillful device for the spotting of fallacies as part of training in rhetoric and basic reasoning. If it was unwitting, Gorgias still emerges as what he was claimed to beââ¬âa deft rhetorical wordsmith on any topic proposed to him. Protagoras Perhaps the greatest of the Sophists was Protagoras of Abdera (481ââ¬â 411 b. c. e. ). Protagoras was an archetypal Sophist: an active traveler and first-rate observer of other cultures who noted that although there are a variety of customs and beliefs, each culture believes unquestioningly that its own ways are rightââ¬âand roundly condemns (or at least criticizes) views that differ from its own. Based on his observations and travels, Protagoras concluded that morals are nothing more than the social traditions, or mores, of a society or group. The details of Protagorasââ¬â¢s beliefs remain disputed. When he said, for example, that ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëanthropos [humanity] is a/the measure for all things, of things that are, that they are, and of things that are not, that they are not,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ it is unclear whether he is talking about one person or the sum total of persons; about ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëaââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ measure or ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëtheââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ measure (there is no definite article in Greek); or about existence or states of affairs or both. The Economics of Game Theory Consider this : Could Western management techniques be successfully implemented in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) ? Granted, they have to be adapted, modified and cannot be imported in their entirety. But their crux, their inalienable nucleus ââ¬â can this be transported and transplanted in CEE ? Theory provides us with a positive answer. Human agents are the same everywhere and are mostly rational. Practice begs to differ. Basic concepts such as the money value of time or the moral and legal meaning of property are non existent. The legal, political and economic environments are all unpredictable. As a result, economic players will prefer to maximize their utility immediately (steal from the workplace, for instance) ââ¬â than to wait for longer term (potentially, larger) benefits. Warrants (stock options) convertible to the companyââ¬â¢s shares constitute a strong workplace incentive in the West (because there is an horizon and they increase the employeeââ¬â¢s welfa re in the long term). Where the future is speculation ââ¬â speculation withers. Stock options or a small stake in his firm, will only encourage the employee to blackmail the other shareholders by paralysing the firm, to abuse his new position and will be interpreted as immunity, conferred from above, from the consequences of illegal activities. The very allocation of options or shares will be interpreted as a sign of weakness, dependence and need, to be exploited. Hierarchy is equated with slavery and employees will rather harm their long term interests than follow instructions or be subjected to criticism ââ¬â never mind how constructive. The employees in CEE regard the corporate environment as a conflict zone, a zero sum game (in which the gains by some equal the losses to others). In the West, the employees participate in the increase in the firmââ¬â¢s value. The difference between these attitudes is irreconcilable. Now, let us consider this : An entrepreneur is a person who is gifted at identifying the unsatisfied needs of a market, at mobilizing and organizing the resources required to satisfy those needs and at defining a long-term strategy of development and marketing. As the enterprise grows, two processes combine to denude the entrepreneur of some of his initial functions. The firm has ever growing needs for capital : financial, human, assets and so on. Additionally, the company begins (or should begin) to interface and interact with older, better established firms.

Current Events in Business Research Essay
INTRODUCTION There are six basic stages to the research process. Stage 1 is clarifying the research question. This would be the process in identifying the problem that is prompting the research. Stage 2 is proposing research, which would be the act of identifying the resources necessary to do the research. The third stage is designing the research project, or deciding which method to use to gather the information. Stage 4 involves data collection and preparation, which is gathering the data and making it ready to be evaluated. Stage 5 would be the data analysis and interpretation stage. Stage 5 is defining what the data is saying about the problem. The final stage, stage 6 is reporting the results. This is breaking down the interpretation into a presentation that shows the meaning of the data collected. (Cooper & Schindler, 2014) This is the process used by Paramount Pictures recently when it was in contract negotiations with the DVD rental company, Redbox. THE DILEMMA As the major Hollywood studios took sides for and against Redbox, Paramount Pictures was staying neutral. The studio had signed a first-of-its-kind trial deal guaranteeing that its titles will be available from the fast-growing $1-a-night DVD rental company through the end of the year. During that time, Paramount would study the effect of Redbox rentals on its total home-entertainment revenue, examining whether there is any decrease in the sales of its DVDs at stores that house Redbox kiosks. Under the terms of the agreement, Paramount would have the option at the end of the year to trigger a five-year deal with Redbox similar to ones recently struck withà competitors Sony Pictures and Lionsgate. The estimated value of the agreement was $575 million. Redbox President Mitch Lowe agreed because Paramount movies performed better at the box office that year. A Paramount agreement would give the studio a share of rental revenue, meaning it could earn more than $575 million if its movies prove popular. Sony and Lionsgate are selling their discs wholesale to Redbox. Though it doesnââ¬â¢t have a formal deal with the company, Walt Disney Studios allows its wholesalers to sell discs to Redbox as well. (Fritz, 2009) ââ¬Å"There has been a lot of debate in the industry about the impact Redbox is having and will have, and we felt the best way to make a decision is by getting the information,â⬠said Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore. ââ¬Å"Then we can make an informed decision based on what we will have learned over the next four months.â⬠Guaranteed access to Paramountââ¬â¢s movies was important for Redbox. The studio released two of that summerââ¬â¢s biggest movies, ââ¬Å"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallenâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Star Trek.â⬠(Fritz, 2009) A movie that plays well in the theaters tends to do well when it is available to rent. Rental revenue could also provide a much-needed boost to the bottom line of Paramount. Lowe said he was confident that providing detailed data to Paramount would help resolve the heated disputes in Hollywood about his companyââ¬â¢s effect on the entertainment business. Lowe has previously said his companyââ¬â¢s research found that DVD sales dropped less than 1% in stores that installed a Redbox kiosk. ââ¬Å"Many studios do their own analysis that we know is not as reliable and is aimed at coming to the answer they want to hear,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"We find that when we can form a relationship with a studio and share real data, it results in a positive step forward.â⬠Moore said he hadnââ¬â¢t reached any ââ¬Å"definitive conclusionsâ⬠as to what steps he would take if the data showed that Redbox rentals do in fact reduce overall revenue. So, the dilemma that Paramount has is w hether or not partnering with Redbox will reduce its sales income more than it will increase its rental revenue. THE PROCESS Paramount and Redbox did the research to determine whether or not rentals available the same day to buy decreased the sales revenue any more or less than those studios who decided to wait 28 days to make them available. Despite some content executives recently having touted the benefits of aà 28-day window for DVD titles, Coinstar Inc.ââ¬â¢s CEO Paul Davis said the companyââ¬â¢s own research showed Redbox Automated Retail LLC kiosks have a minimal impact on DVD sales. ââ¬Å"We did a major study, a little over a year ago, with a major studio and a major retailer and we found that the impact on new product sales as a result of our $1-a-night being out there, day and date, was less than 1%,â⬠Redbox worked closely with Paramount, and they did a lot of testing as well, and the fact that they decided to go with day and date (of release) I think speaks volumes.â⬠(James, 2010) CONCLUSION After reviewing the data collected by themselves and Redbox in 2009, Paramount Pictures made their decision. In June, 2010, Paramount exercised its option to extend its revenue-sharing license agreement with Redbox, which gives Redbox access to Paramountââ¬â¢s newly released DVDs and Blu-ray titles on the same day they are released in the sell-through market. Paramountââ¬â¢s extended agreement with Redbox runs until the end of 2014, though the studio will had the option to terminate the agreement early at the end of 2011. (James, 2010) As a result of the research, Davis thought that studios that have the 28-day window might opt to tweak their Redbox agreements to get certain DVD titles out for rental sooner. ââ¬Å"Especially as more and more data gets out there and â⬠¦ as the studios that have opted for the 28-day window, as they have a year or so to look at the data, see how itââ¬â¢s impacted their new product sales â⬠¦ it could move that we get some titles earlier,â⬠he said.(James, 2010) The process that Paramount and Redbox used, and the data they collected, could prove to be useful data to the other studios as to whether or not they should wait the 28 days. Individual vs. Social Consciousness Free Online Research Papers Individual vs. Social Consciousness in Hobbes, Madison, Hegel, and Marx Hobbes and Madison derive their concept of politics in the liberal tradition of individualism, sketching out an ahistorical notion of human nature. By contrast, Hegel and Marx view the political as a social construction understood as dialectic. From this dialectic arises a progressive self consciousness. This is a historical process. Hobbes approach towards the nature of man is viewed from a mechanistic and ontological perspective: a vision rooted in a fixed state of being. Hobbes defines this as the ââ¬Å"state of nature.â⬠Through his liberalism, he conceptualizes all individuals as equals: ââ¬Å"Nature hath made menâ⬠¦ equal in the faculties of body and mindâ⬠(74). He views the state of man without government as a constant struggle and competition over limited resources. This results in a life that is ââ¬Å"solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and shortâ⬠(76). The solution to this problem is found through the ââ¬Å"Leviathan.â⬠This is the collective body of mankind united as the commonwealth. In Hobbes words: ââ¬Å"the multitude so united in one person is called a COMMONWEALTH, in Latin CIVITAS. This is the generation of that great LEVIATHAN, or rather (to speak more reverently) of that Mortal God to which we owe, under the Immortal God, our peace and defenseâ⬠(109). The Leviathan ensures mankindââ¬â¢s security against the state of nature in exchange for submission to it, and is therefore merely a contract that does not change mankindââ¬â¢s essential nature. The allegiance to the Leviathan lies in the Hobbesian choice: life or death. It is a system built on lowest-common-denominator politics. There is no teleological or transcendental goal or finis ultimus (57). It is a conservative rather than a progressive approach, in which the object is only to maintain peace and security amidst the constant threat of anarchy. Hobbes crudely defines a rational subject as one who seeks his own survival at the cost of his freedom. The desire for self-preservation remains constant and so self-consciousness will always be the same. Thus the conception of politics derived from Hobbesââ¬â¢ theory of human nature is ahistorical. There is no way for manââ¬â¢s self consciousness to evolve or change over time because the state of nature in which he exists is static. Man cannot escape his natural propensity towards violence. As in Hobbes, Madison conceives of a static, inescapable condition of mankind. He provides a similar ontological view towards man and his natural tendency towards violence and factionalism: ââ¬Å"The latent causes of faction are thus sown in the nature of manâ⬠(Federalist No. 10, 2). Unlike Hobbes however, Madison allows for some historical thinking, because he believes politics and behavior to be influenced by society. He writes, ââ¬Å"we see [factions] everywhere brought into different degrees of activity, according to the different circumstances of civil societyâ⬠(2). Nevertheless the essential core of human nature remains unchanged. Madison posits a more pragmatic approach to human nature and its susceptibility to its passions. His preferred method for confronting the spirit of factions is the federalist system of government. The goal of federalism is to channel human nature, not create a model of absolute tyranny, as weââ¬â¢ve seen in Hobbes. Madison favors republicanism and describes it as a cure to direct democracy, which causes the tyranny of majority rule. The federalist republican system ââ¬Å"promises the cure for which we are seekingâ⬠(4). It is characterized by the following three features: (1) place as much of the government as possible beyond the direct control of the majority (2) divide the powers of the different institutions (3) construct a system of checks and balances. The federalist system corrects the natural factionalism of human nature; it checks rather then reforms the soul. ââ¬Å"It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?â⬠(Federalist No. 51, 7-8). Hobbes and Madison have a individualist view of self consciousness and politics. This ahistorical formation of mankind is limited to a single unit of consciousness, as it exists independent of another. Both the Leviathan and federalist papers describe social contracts, external forces that serve only to govern individual consciousness rather then create, form or alter them. In contrast Hegel and Marx characterize a dialectical formation of consciousness. In Hegel the Self is created only through recognition by the Other. In Marx self consciousness is determined through class struggle. These conceptions of consciousness are historical for they conceive of people in relation to one another. Therefore these relationships can shift, evolve and change as they are subject to historical contingency. Hegel imagines consciousness as defined through the dialectic. This means two beings are in correspondence with another yet each can only fully exist in their recognition by one another. Hegel writes ââ¬Å"Self consciousness exists in and for itself when, and by the fact that, it so exists for another; that is it exists only in being acknowledgedâ⬠(111). Only in being recognized by another can we conceive of ourselves. This relationship is caste by Hegel in the form of the lord/bondsman dialectic. Upon the meeting of the self and the other, the first instinct of the self is to attain primacy by destroying the other but the self then realizes without the other there is no recognition of its mastery and therefore will cease to exist. The master must enslave the other in order to continue to be recognized as master. Therefore master exists in relation to slave and slave in relation to his master. The slave endures the oppression of his master and can only understand himself through service to the master: ââ¬Å"Through work however, the bondsman becomes conscious of what he truly is.â⬠This process evolves over time as it gains a heightened awareness of itself. It is thus a historical changing idea of human nature. Hegel gestures toward an understanding of mental progression culminating in an ideal self consciousness. This is the finis ultimus that Hobbes does not allow for in his political visi on. Marx maintains the Hegelian dialectic but changes the idealism to historical materialism. In contrast to Hegelââ¬â¢s idealist philosophy, by which material reality is created by consciousness, Marx claims that material reality creates consciousness and the realm of knowledge. Marx plays out the dialectic along, material, economic and historical lines: Freeman and slave, patrician and plebian, lord and serf, guild-master and journeyman, in a word, oppressor and oppressed, stood in constant opposition to one another, now hidden, now open fight, a fight that each time ended, either in a revolutionary re-construction of society at large, or in the common ruin of the contending classes (473-474). This represents the historical realization of the master/slave dialectic, or dialectical materialism. The relationship between master/slave as seen in Hegel is equivalent to the Bourgeoisie/proletariat relationship in Marx. The abstract relationship is converted to an economic relationship. The Bourgeoisie understands itself in relation to the Proletariat and vice versa. This is what Marx called class consciousness. The understanding of class consciousness as a reciprocal process of recognition serves to empower and liberate the Proletariat struggle against the Bourgeoisie. In his manifesto Marx writes: ââ¬Å"The Bourgeoisie itself, therefore, supplies the proletariat with its own elements of political and general education, in other words, it furnishes the proletariat with weapons for fighting the bourgeoisieâ⬠¦.these also supply the proletariat with fresh elements of enlightenment and progress.â⬠(481) The working class gains heightened social consciousness through the understanding of the Bourgeoisieââ¬â¢s need for recognition. Marx posits a forward moving theory of change as history is propelled by the material dialectic of the stratified class system. This is an interactive process of becoming. Marx describes a change in subjectivity due to the capitalist mode of production: ââ¬Å"the modern bourgeoisie is itself the product of a long course of development, of a series of revolutions in the modes of production and exchangeâ⬠(475). For Marx material forces determine self consciousness. Desires are constantly informed and outlawed; the self is commoditized and transformed into an object of exchange. Marx would call this alienation, caused by the capitalist directive. Both the philosophies of Hobbesââ¬â¢ and Hegel are embodied in Marxââ¬â¢ political thought. His manifesto unites the materialism of Hobbesââ¬â¢ and Hegelââ¬â¢s idea of a socially formed consciousness to produce a doctrine of dialectic materialism. Unlike Hegel however, Marx destination was not an absolute or ideal self consciousness, but rather the end to the class based struggle in which capital overwhelms all human subjectivity. The central difference in the ahistorical verses the historical shaping of the political for these thinkers is rooted in the individualist means for survival. Through the ahistorical lens offered by Hobbes and Madison the nature of man is implied and the goal of life is not in reaching a transcendental state but, merely in staffing off the chaos inherent in nature. In contrast, Hegel and Marx envision an ultimate end, a progressive consciousness illustrated through dialecticism. Hegel gestures towards this understanding through recognition of the self by another, with the purpose of spiritual enlightenment in mind. These goals are actualized in Marx through the realization of social consciousness and the resolution of the stratified society.
